About
Nataly Horan Gutierrez is a Colombian-born artist based in South Florida. Working with India ink and water on paper and canvas, she builds compositions through the repetition of hand-drawn circles.
Her practice is grounded in a desire to return to something tangible and human. Each work develops slowly, without a predetermined composition. Variations in pressure, scale, rhythm, and density remain visible, allowing the process to register as part of the finished piece.
The circle functions as both subject and structure. It may suggest a cell, a planet, a boundary, a gathering, or a passage of time. Individually, each mark is self-contained. Collectively, the circles accumulate into shifting fields that expand, compress, overlap, and dissolve.
Imperfection is central to the work. The marks are not corrected or standardized. Their irregularity preserves the presence of the hand and resists the visual uniformity of automated production.
Her ongoing body of work, We Are All Just Taking Up Space, considers how we occupy physical, emotional, and collective space. The title reflects a simple proposition: presence does not need to be earned.
Rather than prescribing a fixed interpretation, the work invites sustained looking. It offers a space for stillness, ambiguity, and recognition.
